If it ever becomes possible for men to give birth...

...I might consider having Ben Folds' baby. He rules. Tonight he did a free live show here in L.A. in support of his newly released CD, "Songs for Silverman." It was a short 45 minute, 9 song set, but it was fantastic, as his live shows always are.

The highlight, for me, was definitely his cover of Dr. Dre's "Bitches Ain't Shit" (from Dr. Dre's seminal 1992 disc "The Chronic"). You can get a copy of it on i-Tunes. Go spend the dollar - you'll be happy.

His performance of this song resulted in the only time I've ever seen security applaud for a song at a concert. There was this big ol' hulk of a security guard who had clearly never heard of Ben Folds, but was quite familiar with Dre's tune, and he was cracking up when Ben started playing. And at the end, he was clapping as much as anyone in the audience (which wasn't very big, by the by - a couple of hundred people, tops, in this outside little courtyardish area - very cozy little show).

While on the subject of Ben Folds, I'm not sure how long this interview with Ben at Paste Magazine will be online, but you should read it ff for no other reason than to hear Ben talk about the idea of flipping over a piano like a rock star busting up his guitar. You know how when you meet that person who is your partner for life, and you realize how empty your life was before? That's how I feel now - my life was empty before learning about the possibility of a piano being flipped over. I need to see this happen.
